DEWA
About DEWA
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is a government-owned utility responsible for delivering electricity and water services across Dubai. Serving millions of residents, businesses, and government entities, DEWA plays a critical role in supporting the city’s rapid growth and digital transformation agenda. In addition to managing core infrastructure, DEWA invests heavily in smart technologies and customer-facing digital platforms, aiming to provide seamless, efficient, and sustainable services that align with Dubai’s vision of becoming one of the world’s leading smart cities.
Background
As a Product Designer working with DEWA, I contributed to improving the user experience across their digital touchpoints, including the mobile app, smartwatch app, and smart TV app. My role involved refining existing interfaces and designing new interactions that made it easier for customers to manage their electricity and water services.
I collaborated with cross-functional teams to ensure consistency across platforms, align designs with DEWA’s smart city and sustainability goals, and validate solutions through usability testing and prototyping. This work supported DEWA’s wider digital transformation programme, helping to create more intuitive, accessible, and efficient services for millions of customers.
Business outcomes
The following outcomes highlight how my contributions helped improve customer experience while driving measurable impact for DEWA’s digital platforms.
Research & scope development
We began by mapping the existing digital ecosystem and identifying key pain points across mobile, smartwatch, and smart TV platforms, defining a scope that aligned with DEWA’s wider digital transformation goals.
App user experience and interface
I contributed to refining the DEWA mobile app experience, simplifying complex tasks such as bill payments and meter readings while ensuring interfaces were clear, responsive, and accessible.
Smart watch app user experience and interface
We extended core customer journeys onto smartwatch, focusing on lightweight, quick-glance interactions that gave users instant access to essential account and service information.
Smart watch app interfaces
The smartwatch interface design prioritised clarity and ease of use within a limited screen size, delivering key features like usage alerts and quick payments in an intuitive format.
Design system elements
To maintain consistency, I contributed to design system elements that supported cross-platform scalability, ensuring brand alignment while allowing flexibility for platform-specific interactions.
DEWA Smart TV app
The Apple TV experience was designed to bring DEWA services into the home environment, making usage tracking and notifications accessible on larger shared screens.
Smart TV user experience and interface
We optimised the TV interface for a lean-back experience, highlighting key data points in a visual, simplified format suitable for at-a-glance use in a household setting.
Software tools used
The project was delivered using industry-standard design and collaboration tools including Figma, Sketch, and InVision, alongside DEWA’s internal systems for testing and validation.
